In the week of 23-30 October 2023, Australia has been tackling an escalating level of cyber threats. Cybersecurity is now a Strategic Priority for National Security.
As per the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), Cybersecurity is now a Strategic Priority for National Security due to the dramatically increasing threat of cyber-attacks. The Australian Government's focus on cyber security is reflected in its 2023-2030 Australian Cyber Security Strategy.
Cybersecurity is now a Strategic Priority for National Security - Why and How. This strategy aims to build six cyber shields around the country involving citizens, businesses and governmental organisations. The goal is to provide a robust defence against the types of threats that have been identified, including business email compromise, data breaches, hacking, identity theft, malware, ransomware, scams, and system and network attacks.
Recent data shows that more than two in 10 businesses (22%) experienced a cyber security attack during the 2021-22 financial year. This is a significant increase compared to previous years, highlighting the situation's urgency.
Furthermore, the Department of Home Affairs is actively working on cyber security threats and opportunities both in Australia and overseas, including the security of critical and emerging technology.
Given these developments, it is evident WHY Cybersecurity is now a Strategic Priority for National Security. Business decision-makers must prioritise cybersecurity measures within their strategic planning. This includes staying informed about the latest threats, investing in robust security systems, and training staff to recognize and respond to potential cyber threats.
The escalation of cyber threats in Australia is a serious concern that requires immediate attention and action. The Australian Government's efforts, while commendable, need to be complemented by proactive measures taken by businesses and individuals alike to ensure a comprehensive defence against these threats.
Stay safe,
